The role of a Data Protection Officer and Data Protection Office: the challenges that lie ahead

Topic:

The position of the Data Privacy Officer (DPO) and Data Protection Office within an organization, is a hot topic for companies in Belgium. How can this function be incorporated within the context of an organization and what challenges lie ahead?

With the upcoming European ‘Global Data Protection Regulation’ (GDPR) in mind, a wide variety of questions are raised with regard to filling out the role of the Data Protection Officer and the tasks related; where to position this function in the organization; and how the staffing of this function can be done.

Based on insights from professional literature, KPMG Privacy workshops, and hands on market experience with DPO’s in the field an interesting agenda was put together to demystify the concepts of a DPO and DPOffice.

The session is intended for all that are interested in learning more on the subject matter and that want to attend a moderated panel session with industry experts.

In the session we will discuss following questions:
• What is a DPO and what does a DPOffice look like?
• Where to position the Data Protection function within an organisation?
• What is the level of authority to be given to the Data Protection function within an organization?
• What are the challenges for a DPO and DPOffice to install and run the Data Protection function?
• How can attestation help to gain customer trust and gain comfort from your vendors?

The presenters for this session will be:

Mrs Kara Segers, CIPT, CISA – KPMG Belgium
Kara is a Senior Data Privacy Expert within KPMG Belgium’s Information Protection Services. Kara joined KPMG in 2011 and is a team member in the cross department (legal & management consulting) Data Privacy Team.
